Forget the New Year’s Makeover- 2012 is about the Make-under!

Sammi Before

The arrival of the New Year signals the creation of resolutions focused on emotional and physical enhancement. When it comes to beauty, some women like to deviate from a regular routine, hoping to spice it up for 2012. But, it doesn’t look like the natural makeup trend is going anywhere, and if we’ve learned anything from Jersey Shore’s Sammi Sweetheart, a dramatic make-under can be even more flattering than a makeover. Here, makeup expert Gail Sagel, CEO of FACES Beautiful and creator of the Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup, shares her tips for creating the highly sought-after natural-looking face.

When crafting a natural look, keep a few key things in mind. To begin, it is just as important to moisturize skin as it is to know one’s natural skin tone. Understanding one’s complexion is significant in choosing the best nude shade to enhance facial features. For example, if your skin tone is cool, choose something with pink undertones; if your complexion is warm, a yellow undertone would be best.

Standout Eyes
· Shade eyelids with a soft hand; shimmery colors can look especially flattering if they are not too dramatic. “Stila’s In the Light palate of natural colors is beautiful. It has a color range that could work for anyone and is absolutely perfect for blending,” says Gail. Use a coat or two of mascara, and a swipe of eyeliner if you desire, but stop there.

· An eyebrow expert, Gail suggests going for the bold brow to further enhance the look. “Stay in the same color family when you define your brow; a shade darker than your natural hue is sufficient. Use a shadow that basically matches your eyebrow, and blend upward with a small brush.”

Fresh Face
· When it comes to foundation, keep it light. If you can get away without concealer, Gail encourages it. “I like to use products that highlight the skin rather than hide it, especially when creating a look of this nature. My go-to facial enhancer is FACES Beautiful Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup, which gives a flawless finish that leaves skin glowing.”

· For blush, stick to something that’s around your normal flush color. Gail prefers a cream blush here, which allows for better, more even blending. Gail suggests Smashbox’s Be Discovered Cream Cheek Trio, as the presence of multiple colors allows you to change your blush color by the season, depending on your tan.

Luscious, but Natural, Lips
· As previously stated, moisturizing is important. Make sure that you are lathering your lips with medicated balms that keep them healthy and in prime condition. Choose a color that is similar to the blush color used; this will tie the look together and also make it appear even more natural.

· “When choosing a lip option, you want something that has the thickness of lipstick without drying or the shine of a gloss. Choose a tinted lip balm, to keep your lips hydrated as well as radiant,” says Gail. Her favorite lip tint? Benefit BeneTint Lip Balm. “The combination of color and moisture makes it ideal for this look.”

According to Gail, “People are always surprised to see that creating a fresh face is just as complex as applying makeup for a night out. However, once you’ve mastered this technique, you can keep it in your repertoire for any occasion. And remember, the most important thing is to create a face that makes you feel as good as you look!”

Get the Look: 2012 People’s Choice Awards

Did you catch the People’s Choice Awards last night? In case you missed it, sexy beach waves and pale pink polish were hit trends on the red carpet. Below are tips from Butterfly Studio Salon stylist, Vanessa Fernandez, and As U Wish Nail Spa owner, Skyy Hadley on how you can re-create the looks of Julianne Hough, Ashley Greene and Ashley Benson!

To give yourself a red carpet ready manicure at home in minutes follow these easy steps from celeb manicurist, Skyy Hadley.

  1. Remove any nail polish and wash your hands. Always start a manicure with clean hands.
  2. File your nails. I recommend squoval shaped nails for the winter. Start with the square shape and tilt the file underneath the corners and file back and forth from the underneath up. This will gradually round out the edges. If your nails are too square during cold winter months they can crack and break easily.
  3. Lightly buff your nails to remove any ridges.
  4. Rub a cuticle oil or cream on your cuticles, you can use olive oil or Vaseline if you don’t have cuticle oil, and push your cuticles back with a cuticle pusher. This will lengthen your nail and give a clean look.
  5. Apply a thin layer of base coat to all nails.
  6. Apply two even coats of pale pink or nude polish to your nails.
  7. Always finish with a layer of clear top coat to extend the life of your manicure and give it that professional shine.

Julianne Hough’s Sexy Bouncy Waves

  •  Begin with clean towel dried hair
  •  Apply a volumizing mousse like the Kerastase Mousse Substantive before blowing out your hair with a 1 ½”round brush to create bouncy waves.
  • Using a 1 1/2″-1 1/4″ wide curling iron, grab 1″ vertical sections of hair and curl away from your face.
  •  Shake your hair out from underneath to create a sexy bounce
  • Finish with a medium hold hair spray like Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer.

Ashley Greene’s Seductive Long Waves

  •  Begin with clean towel dried hair
  • Twist 1″ sections of hair away from your face going all around your head and apply a curl enhancing cream like the Shu Uemura Kaze Wave and air dry or diffuse until 90% dry.
  •  Apply a heat protecting spray like the Kerastase Fibre Architecte to protect hair from the heat of the iron and create a shinier look.
  • Using a 1” wide curling iron, grab 1″ random vertical sections of hair and wrap around barrel and curl away from your face.
  • Run your hands through when done for separation.
  •  Finish with a medium hold hair spray like Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer.

Ashley Benson’s Textured Waves

  • Begin with clean towel dried hair. Wrap hair in towel to remove excess water and to start creating texture
  • Use a light pomade such as Magic Move Light and twist random sections of hair to create more texture.
  • Use a blow dryer to set each section by twisting and applying heat at the same time. If needed, use a clipless curling iron about 3/4″-1″ to set in waves by wrapping sections around the barrel away from face and when releasing each piece pulling on it to make more of a stretched out wave.
