Why do I have this amazing 80’s family photo on a makeup site? Well because its my family. My mom, dad, 3 brothers and my fabulously middle aged 80’s woman dressed self. (My only excuse was I was home schooled) But there is more to this picture then an opportunity for blackmail. This is the photo of a family of 6, who as of this date have been hit with skin cancer 3 times.
First was my mom with a squamous cell carcinoma, then a year later my dad had a basal cell carcinoma. And just last year the little stud in the suit my youngest brother was diagnosed with melanoma. Luckily for my family they all found the cancer early. My brother’s was the most serious and they had to cut out a large portion of skin and tissue above his knee to make sure they removed it all. He was only 31 when he was diagnosed which is a reminder that skin cancer isn’t partial to age, it can hit at any time.
Living in the Pacific NW and more rainy, grey days then sun you would think even with our fair skin we would be safer. But the fact 50% of my family has already had skin cancer shows it can hit anyone, anywhere, at any age. Though that might sound scary the best part is that skin cancer is preventable. Just a few minutes a day of applying broad spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin then reapplying can save people from this scary diagnosis. Along with prevention make sure you are getting your skin checked by your health care provider. Catching skin cancer early makes all the difference especially in the case of melanoma.
Due to seeing the reality of skin cancer first hand I am diligent about using sunscreen and will spray down just about anyone I care about. (It takes a village right?) I have 3 young kids with my same fair skin so we don’t go anywhere without sunscreen. I keep a Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids in our beach bag, and the Neutrogena Sport Sunscreen in my car. I love the sprays with 3 kids it makes application and reapplying so much easier and with Ultra Sheer for our faces I am not worried about anyone ingesting the spray.
My Why #ChooseSkinHealth is those 3 little wild things that I was lucky enough to be chosen to parent. I want to teach them sun protection early and make it a life long habit for them.
