Dakota Fanning’s controversial Marc Jacobs ads banned from the UK

Remember these ads? I posted them back in June when they were released by Marc Jacobs. The controversial ads are back in the public eye today, after the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK banned them, saying that while Dakota Fanning is over 16, the ads are overly sexual for a child.

Apparently the ad, which promotes Jacob’s fragrance ‘Oh Lola!’, was the subject of consumer complaints,  reports Telegraph.

The British Advertising Standards Authority has cracked down on the ad, which features a 17-year-old Fanning with an oversized bottle of the fragrance between her legs, after receiving complaints that the company was turning Fanning, a minor, into a sex object. Their statement:

“We noted that the model was holding up the perfume bottle which rested in her lap between her legs and we considered that its position was sexually provocative. We understood the model was 17 years old but we considered she looked under the age of 16. We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child.”The Guardian reports that Coty, who makes the fragrance, doesn’t have the same problems with the ads, because most readers of the magazines featuring the ads are 25 or older, and that the picture was “similar to many other edgy images in those magazines.” They also stated that the ad doesn’t show any “private body parts or sexual activity,” and defended the ad as “provoking, but not indecent.”

What do you think of the ad? Is it too much? Does it deserve to be banned?

NARS & Marc Jacobs team up for an awesome collaboration!!

Fashion designer Marc Jacobs - and makeup genius François Nars have teamed up in a beautiful way! In a friendship that has lasted several years, the two are collaborating in an amazing way!

First Marc called upon François to helm the makeup backstage at his fall 2009 show (and he has been doing so ever since); then François persuaded Marc to sit in front of his lens, and pose (fully made-up) for his book, 15X15. Now the twosome is getting together once again for a new collaboration: cool—and clever—boxed sets of fingerless cashmere Marc Jacobs gloves and NARS nail lacquers.

Available in black cashmere with black-gold polish or purple cashmere with smoky lavender polish, the sets marry a major accessories trend—fingerless gloves not only make texting easier but they carry the same cool factor as a pair of open-toed boots—with one of the season’s best beauty looks. Of the polishes, which Nars mixed exclusively for this project, he says, “they don’t match the gloves, but complement them.” Everyone can appreciate that.

Marc Jacobs Fingerless Glove and NARS nail polish sets, $52; available exclusively at Nars 413 Bleecker Street, New York, 646.459.2323.

I love it!

Are Marc Jacob’s new Lola ads featuring Dakota Fanning too provocative?

17-year-old Dakota Fanning is the new face of Marc Jacob’s fragrance Lola. (Lola is my absolute FAVORITE fragrance!)

She is completely clothed, but the ad is making many people upset. Could it have something to do with the flower resting on her lady bits?

At just 17, Dakota Fanning is still a year under the legal age of consent in her home state of California, but this trifling fact doesn’t seem to concern Marc Jacobs. The 48-year-old designer chose to place the teenager in a provocative pose – in homage to a 1950s novel about sex with an under age girl – to sell his new perfume, Oh, Lola!

Jacobs’ long-term collaborator Juergen Teller shot the Twilight star in Los Angeles wearing a girlish, pink scalloped polka dot dress. The background, is similarly juvenile – it’s monotone pastel pink compounding the innocence of the composition. But then a large bottle of the scent, featuring it’s signature rose-top has been placed provocatively in between the young starlet’s legs. The teenager clutches it as she tilts back lasciviously and stares intently into the camera.

New Yorker Jacobs admits that his intention was to portray the young woman as a re-boot of the tragic character in Vladimir Nabokov’s 1955 novel, Lolita, which tells the story of young girl’s sexual relationship with a much older man, who becomes her step-father.

He told Women’s Wear Daily: ‘When we were speaking about who to use in the ads, I had recently seen The Runaways…I knew she could be this contemporary Lolita, seductive yet sweet.’

The iconic novel tells the story of sexual predator Humbert Humbert and his exploitation of his ‘Lolita’ from the age of 12.

Ironically, this is the age at which Dakota first posed for the successful designer.

The pull of Jacobs is so strong that Fanning admitted she was: ‘humbled by the offer and said yes immediately.’ Dakota recently graduated from high school and joined her peers to receive her diploma. She attended classes at the $30,000 a year private school in North Hollywood and last year was crowned Homecoming Queen. But despite her Hollywood career Dakota insists that she is a down-to-earth normal teenager.

She said: ‘I have such a normal life when I’m not working… It’s just nice to be around people you care about and who know you best.’

What do you think? Are they inappropriate?

Helena Bonham Carter named new face of Marc Jacobs!

She may be known for being more shabby than chic but it seems Helena Bonham Carter is a hit with the fashion industry.

The actress has joined the ranks of Victoria Beckham, Dakota Fanning and Sofia Coppola to become the latest face of U.S label Marc Jacobs.

The choice may seem like an odd one, especially as Helena is a devoted Vivienne Westwood fan, but perhaps talks began after Jacobs dressed the actress for the Sagg awards.

Either way, Helena has always divided critics with her whacky sense of fashion.

But her mismatched style earned her a place on the Vanity Fair Best Dressed List last year.

The Harry Potter star, 44, who counts Marie Antoinette as one of her style icons, told the New York Daily News: ‘It was a triumph! ….It made me laugh because I thought it was a joke when I found out.

‘But when I saw the article, I thought, “Oh, the photos they’ve chosen are as bad as the ones they print when I’m worst dressed.”‘
