Behind-The-Scenes with Katy Perry

Katy Perry introduces her latest fragrance Killer Queen by Katy Perry ($59), just in time for fall. The new, strikingly gorgeous perfume captures Katy Perry’s rebellious spirit, throwing convention to the wind. Inspired by a queen’s scepter, the distinct jewel-shaped bottle in shades of royal red and gold portray sexy sophistication and lawless luxury. The faceted bottle rests languorously on its side, like a loose, precious gem fit for a Queen.

Katy Perry lands the October cover of Elle Canada!

1239487_10152229296019762_615518909_n

Katy Perry lands the October cover of Elle Canada, and in the magazine, she shares a bit too much information. Well, she reveals more information than I needed, I’ll just say that.

On getting older: “I’m 28, and I don’t know how young you are, but, as you must know, when you’re at the end of your 20s, it’s a very important growing time. It’s called the Saturn return, if you like astrology—I know it’s important for me. I think that it’s a very important time, when you kind of let go of childish things and accept the wisdom that comes with age,” she explains. “That’s exactly where I am now.”

On her evolution: “I’ve always been a sponge; I’ve always had a desire to learn,” she explains. “I didn’t grow up with a real education, but now I am kind of educated by life.”

On her inspirations: The kid who wasn’t allowed to listen to “secular” music has certainly broadened her tastes. She smiles when she tells me that she went to see Kinky Boots on Broadway the night before. “I loved it. I was surprised that I was emotional about it. The message is so powerful.” The musical is based on the true story of a shoemaker who teams up with a drag queen to save his family business. It’s fun and glitzy and boasts a score by Cyndi Lauper. At its core, though, the story is about the characters’ search for commonality and struggle to stand up to their parents. No wonder Perry loved it. Her rebellious streak may be why she says she’s so inspired by strong women like Joan of Arc. She puts it more simply, though. “I always like to go the unique road less travelled.”

TMI:
Then, while describing her preferred brand of vitamin C, she casually mentions that the only drawback is that it tastes like “a load and is disgusting.” She smiles, continuing on, and then stops dead and laughs. “I can’t believe I just said that! Strike the ‘load’ part!”

Her beauty routine: Before long, she has flicked her pumps onto the floor (“Yeah, I’m taking my shoes off!”) and dumped the contents of her makeup bag out on the coffee table. “There we go!” she says. “My bag of tricks!” It’s an unusually literal response to an admittedly rote line of questioning about her beauty regimen. “I make sure to give myself a break,” she says. “I had to find that balance. But I learned this thing called Transcendental Meditation, which I do as much as I possibly can. It’s 20 minutes and you’re supposed to do it twice a day, but I only do it once every other day—but anyway, it works.” She waves her hand dismissively. “People say you should work out 30 minutes a day—none of us works out 30 minutes a day!”

Calls Rihanna out for her pot smoking: She is equally frank about why she admires her famous friends. “I think that Rihanna always looks so fresh and I’m like, ‘How do you do that? We all know how much pot you smoke! And you don’t sleep because you’re on Instagram at four o’clock in the morning!’” she hoots with mock despair and then winks. “I’ll get her secret for you.”

Katy Perry lands the September cover of ELLE UK!

Katy Perry lands the September issue of Elle UK, and she looks good, no? I feel like there’s some photoshopping going on, like what’s with her right arm? It’s obviously smaller than her left.  She’s wearing a Dolce & Gabbana outfit, and I think she looks pretty good. She isn’t promoting anything right now, although she is currently working on her third album, which will be titled ‘Prism.’

Anyhoo, the interview is weird, I thought. She brings up Kristen Stewart, John Mayer and Rihanna. I think her honesty is refreshing, it’s not the same bottled BS you get in other interviews.

On Kristen Stewart: “I sent her a text message saying: ‘I know you’ve seen all this stuff but you know I would never disrespect you. I’m not that person. I’m just trying to be a friend to him but it is unfortunate that I do have a set of tits.’”

On her two breakups with John Mayer: “He pulled away. That was a big hello for me. I realized I could lose the person I loved and I had to deal with some things, issues I think a lot of women have. You can be strong in one aspect of your life but submissive in another.”

On loving “challenging” men: “I’m not interested in taming anyone – I’m pretty wild myself.”

On/Off BFF Rihanna: “I love her and every time I see her, I’m reminded of the light that she has. There’s a lot of dark in this business. I know a lot of people out there with the most detrimental entourages – they are the root of their demise. It’s really unfortunate but you can’t save these people. My days of celebrity saving are over!”

Katy Perry’s stunning Vogue cover, shot by Annie Leibovitz!

Katy Perry lands the July cover of Vogue, and she looks absolutely amazing, if you ask me. She’s wearing a gorgeous Rodarte dress, and the photos were shot by Annie Leibovitz.

Vogue has just released the interview along with some more beautiful pictures. Katy admits in the interview that she’s still in love with John Mayer, even though at the time they were broken up (and might still be, who knows these days).

Katy also, interestingly, talks about her divorce from Russell Brand. She confesses that Russell asked for their divorce via text message, which is such a d-bag thing to do.

Is being a celebrity overwhelming? “Of course I get fazed. And when I am in between records, sometimes I doubt myself. I’ll be like: Did I just get lucky, or did I mass-manipulate the world into thinking that seven songs were worth a number-one position? And then I go back into the studio and I start writing, and the true essential oil of who I am comes bubbling back up and reminds me that it’s always been inside of me, that nobody can take this away no matter what comment anyone makes. It’s going to be there because it’s what I was born with and it’s what I’ve worked on my whole life.”

Her childhood: The atmosphere at home, she says, was “not fun.” She told me, “My parents did not spare the rod. I wasn’t going to great schools, because my parents didn’t believe in public education. They wanted the education to be influenced by their religion, so I was going to these halfway education-slash-Christian schools that were like pop-up shop–style education. My father is hilarious. That’s where I get my sense of humor from. Sooo, he’s very funny and a practical joker, but he’s more emotional and driven. I mean, my mother is very emotional as well, but my dad is more of the guts of the family. He was the main preacher, so he kind of had this little Pentecostal flair, but they are born-again. So there’s a little bit of my background.”

Russell Brand in the beginning: “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011. I mean, I have to claim my own responsibility in things. I do admit that I was on the road a lot. Although I invited him time and time again, and I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. You saw that in the movie.” Katy Perry: Part of Me, a documentary released last year that has garnered $32 million worldwide to date, covers the period before, during, and after her time with Brand. “That wasn’t edited to leave footage out–there wasn’t any footage of him.”
