7 Ways to Naturally Whiten Your Teeth!

Want whiter teeth this summer? Don’t want to break the bank buying expensive over-the-counter products? AOL Healthy Living offers up 7 natural ways to whiten your teeth!

Bleached, bright-white teeth seem to be everywhere — and while traditional treatments like whitening toothpastes, at-home trays and in-office procedures are an effective way to get there, they can sometimes cause tooth sensitivity and pain. For those hoping to steer clear of chemical treatments, there are a few techniques that can possibly help your smile to sparkle naturally.

The first step is good oral hygiene. “Health and beauty are intertwined,” says Arthur Glosman, D.D.S., a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills. “If something is healthy, it’s going to look beautiful. If it’s sick, no amount of white teeth is going to make it look good.”

Beyond that, here are a few remedies that do (and don’t) work for a whiter — and maybe even healthier — smile.

1: Crunchy fruits and vegetables!

Crunchy, crispy fruits have an abrasiveness that can help to lift stains from the teeth and give the illusion that they are whiter. “They’re like nature’s toothbrush,” Glosman says.

Try munching on apples, celery and carrots, which have enough abrasiveness to clean tooth surface without posing any harm to the enamel, says Emanuel Layliev D.D.S., a cosmetic dentist at the NY Center for Cosmetic Dentistry. “The crispier the better,” he says.

2: Floss!

“People underestimate how important staining is that happens in between the teeth,” Glosman says. “If you just floss, you can remove so much of the staining that’s in between the teeth that your teeth will already look whiter.”

And no matter how bleached your teeth are, they won’t look healthy set up against red, puffy and receded gums, so he recommends continuing to brush at least twice a day on top of a daily flossing.

3: Cheese

There’s a growing body of evidence indicating that eating a small amount of cheese after a meal can potentially help to prevent tooth decay and promote enamel re-mineralization, Glosman says.

Along those same lines: “Milk and yogurt keep teeth sparkling and cavity-free because they contain the minerals calcium and phosphorus, which promote the remineralziation of tooth enamel,” says Lisa Drayer, M.A., R.D., author of “The Beauty Diet: Looking Great Has Never Been So Delicious.”

4: Sugar-free gum with xylitol

Xyoltol is a natural sweetener that can actually help to prevent plaque. While plaque feeds on regular sugar, it can’t digest xylitol. Xylitol also neutralizes pH levels in the mouth and increases saliva production. “Saliva is like the natural cleaner that we have in our mouth,” Glosman says. “It spills through all of the cracks and crevices.”

But bear in mind that this works both ways — while saliva can wash away food and debris, it can also carry bacteria throughout the mouth, meaning twice daily brushings and low sugar intake are just as important.

5: Consider it: Chocolate covered strawberries

There’s a small amount of evidence (largely anecdotal) that has indicated strawberries may promote whiter teeth. On top of that, chocolate can act as an antibacterial element because of the cocoa bean husk, says Layliev, meaning that it can reduce the amount of bacteria. The drawback, of course, is that this treat still has sugar, so don’t indulge excessively.

6: Skip it: Baking soda

While there are properties in baking soda that can remove surface stains, it’s not the ideal long-term tooth whitener, says Kimberly Harms, D.D.S., consumer advisor for the American Dental Association, as it can be too abrasive on teeth and ultimately damage the enamel (which can actually make teeth appear even darker). Instead, she suggests sticking with whitening toothpaste that has a clinically tested, safe amount of abrasive properties. The American Dentistry Association looks at appropriate abrasiveness levels, among other factors, when handing out their ADA Accepted seals.

7: Skip it: Vinegar and lemon

Glosman has heard of people using apple cider and vinegar to whiten teeth, but cautions that it may possibly damage enamel. “I wouldn’t want to go down that route,” he says.

Sonja Morgan Spills Her Secret to Staying Young

Sure, Sonja Morgan knows the value of scrubs and peels in maintaining a healthy glow, but the real secret to her fountain of youth isn’t found at any doctor’s office or spa. “I’m always having fun,” the Real Housewives of New York City star dishes to us. “I think it’s one of the secrets to staying young.”

Of course, dating an attractive younger man doesn’t hurt, either. “I flirt a lot, but I’ve been seeing Brian for three years,” Sonja tells The Dish about her artistic boy toy, who’s about four years her junior. “There’s nothing wrong with Brian, I’ll tell you! You know what I love about him? He never puts the toilet seat up; he always leaves it down. Good manners — no woman wants to fall in the toilet!” Amen, sister!

So, could this be a hint that Sonja’s planning trot out that wedding dress we saw at the marriage equality rally? “I would like to be married again,” The New York Housewife reveals. “But there [are] dates and then there’s marriage. I have no divorce settlement, so I’m working to maintain my home. It’s been messy, but I’m doing well.”

Tangled up in that ongoing divorce is her vacation retreat abroad. “I have a house in France, but it’s in the fight over my divorce, but I own it. Isn’t that funny?” Sonja says. Still, the hot mama has summer plans to fully unwind in France again this year, as well as Colorado, but she’ll kick off swimsuit season in “the smallest bikini” she can find this weekend in the Hamptons. “G-string preferably!”

The scariest beauty invention of all time!

I still can’t decide if this is legit – or some sort of joke!

I just caught a glimpse of this video online, and I’m afraid now that I’ve seen it, I’ll never get the image out of my mind! Are women really using the Facial-Flex which is supposed to tighten the muscles around your mouth.

My question – is it really worth it?

I looked the product up online, and found a few reviews:

As a gym buff, I knew that my face also needed “resistance training” if I were to keep it firm. After using the product for about a week, I noticed that my smile was more symmetrical (for some reason, the left corner of my mouth at times didn’t always rise equally with the right). My cheeks also looked fuller. It’s still a challenge to use the product correctly but I’m making facial flex a part of my regimen.

I found the facial flex to be a great product, but you have to be consistent. I do 120 in the morning and 120 in the evening, it does take some time if you do it properly but you really feel it. I do notice a difference it has been about a month since I started using it.

Maybe I’ll take their word for it?

This product isn’t cheap! It’ll cost ya somewhere between $40 – $60, not including shipping!

Insider Beauty Secrets!

Want to know some beauty insider secret weapons? You might be surprised by some of their tricks (dryer sheets? Really?)!

1) Dryer sheets tame flyaway hair! Next time you’re struck by unwanted flyaways, look no further than the laundry room, says New York makeup artist Alexa Rudolfo. “Passing dryer sheets through static electricity will calm hair in a heartbeat.”

2) If you want to get skin glowing without logging in time at the derm, celebrity makeup artist Troy Surratt suggests adding a tablespoon of baking soda to a bit of water for a really pure paste. “Its consistency mimics that of microdermabrasion, which instantly brightens the face.”

3) Your dream moisturizer just might be in your pantry, of all places. Alexa says that coconut oil (yes, the kind used for cooking!) is packed with natural free-radical fighting antioxidants. Just rub it between palms, wait for it to melt and massage away.

4) For a subtle but sexy pout, try this trick from Alexa: Add a dab of black shadow to the center of the bottom lip and press. You’ll create a unique, sophisticated look that can’t be achieved with all-over color.

5) We’ve never been into being matchy-matchy and makeup is no exception. To make eyes look bigger, coat bottom lashes in blue mascara but stick with your regular black for the top, says makeup artist and creator of Mally Beauty, Mally Roncal. The color contrast makes eyes pop.

6) An eyelash curler is the quickest way to open up eyes, but for those who think the contraption looks too medieval, here’s another option. Grab a great curling mascara and point a blow dryer (on the cool setting) upward while lashes are still wet.

7) Mally says she’s tested this fool-proof trick on many a sleepless celeb: Add a bone-colored eyeliner — white is too stark — to the inner corners of eyes for instant brightness.

8) For a natural looking lash (do professional tints sound scary to you, too?) try using the end of a non-toxic Sharpie on just the tips, suggests Troy. It will last longer than any mascara and, even better, can most likely be found in any desk drawer.

9) We all feel great after getting highlights but they can make sensitive scalps itch. Anya Burton of Chris McMillan The Salon in Beverly Hills admits it’s odd, but she adds Sweet’N Low to color to soothe irritated skin. Who knew the sugar sub could be good for you?

These are all amazing tip! Thanks to glo for the awesome tricks! Can you believe this isn’t even all of them! There’s more here!
