How to protect your hair from heat damage!

For most girls, the one thing they simply cannot live without for more than a day would have to be hair dryers and straighteners. Once you’ve seen how amazing your hair looks after using a pair of salon quality straighteners, such as GHDs, you will want to use them everyday. However, using hair dryers, straighteners and curling tongs can be very bad for your hair. Using straightening irons without a heat protecting spray will leave your hair thin, dry and full of split ends. If this sounds like you, then this blog post will show you how you can protect your hair and make it thicker, silkier and smoother.

Step 1 – If you’ve just got out of the shower, then before you use your hair dryer, spray your hair in a heat protecting serum. It’s not just straightening irons which damage your hair, but also hair dryers. In addition, be sure to use the lower heat setting. While your straighteners heat up, rather than squeezing in a quick game of Cheekybingo or making a drink, take the time to spray another coat of protective serum on your hair and brush it in well. Try to only run the irons through your hair once or twice to save yourself extra heat damage.

Step 2 – After you’ve styled your hair, use a deep conditioning serum on your split ends; the serum will make them silkier and split ends will appear less visible. Then, cover your hair in leave-in conditioning spray which will make your hair smooth and shiny.

Step 3 – When you wash your hair, use a deep conditioning shampoo and conditioner. When your hair is wet, be careful brushing it; wet hair is very weak so if you are too rough, you will pull out a lot of hair strands.

Makers of the Brazilian Blowout forced by the FDA to admit their product causes cancer!

I just read this article on Brazilian Blowout, and it floored me! I had to pass along the information. If you or someone you know has done this – pass it along!

Last year, Brazilian Blowout–a popular Brazilian keratin straightening treatments currently offered at salons–was under fire from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) for containing “dangerous levels” of formaldehyde in its product, despite the fact that its label claimed it was “Formaldehyde Free.” Since then, the company denied the claims and stood by their labeling. But now, it seems they have had a change of heart and have agreed to alert consumers that two of its products emit formaldehyde gas, a possible carcinogen. How nice of them to finally let us know that our quest for straight hair was so toxic.

The labeling changes are designed to settle a lawsuit that was filed in California last November, when the attorney general’s office accused the Hollywood-based company of deceptive advertising. Not only did their labeling state the product was free of formaldehyde, which can irritate the eyes, skin and lungs, but it was found to have anywhere from 8.7 to 10.4% formaldehyde, which is multiple times that of the 0.2 percentage that peer-reviewed Cosmetic Ingredient Review board considers safe for consumers.

California’s Attorney General, Kamala Harris, said in a statement:
“California laws protect consumers and workers and give them fair notice about the health risks associated with the products they use. This settlement requires the company to disclose any hazard so that Californians can make informed choices.”

To which Brazilian Blowout is responding by paying a whopping $600,000 in penalties and fines for failing to notify consumers and hair stylists that its products contain chemicals that may cause cancer. They have also agreed to have their products tested for all toxic substances at a state-approved lab, and include proper labeling on their products alerting consumers of the formaldehyde content–which, of course, most salons already suspected anyway.

Not that this changes anything with the product. Brazilian Blowout is continuing to manufacture and sell the same formula. The only difference is that now consumers should know better than to buy it.

Not sold? Here’s another scathing article from the NY Times.

FIRST LOOK: Kim Kardashian changes her hair color! Love it or hate it?

Kim posted these pictures on her website of her “new” hair color. I can tell she got highlights (which I love, actually), but I wouldn’t really call this a drastic change!

She wrote “I dyed my hair yesterday! I’m loving it! New hair color=new beginnings for me. Like it?”

What do you think of her new color?
