TREND ALERT: BLEACHED-OUT BROWS

TREND ALERT: BLEACHED-OUT BROWS
As Seen at Rodarte and Marc Jacobs Spring ‘11 Runway Shows

Model-favorite Colorist & Wella Professionals Color Ambassador, Laurie Foley, is renowned for her dramatic backstage transformations, and the spring ‘11 fashion week was no different. Backstage at Spring ’11 Fashion Week, Foley brought brows to a whole new level. Foley lightened arches to a bleached blonde with Wella’s Blondor Lightening Powder to complete a ‘70s glam look for intense contrast at both Marc Jacobs and Rodarte. “Bleached blonde brows have seen a few seasons of dominance in Europe and just recently made it over to the US. They make a major statement and really compliment the entire look,” commented Laurie.

More about Laurie Foley:
Laurie Foley, founder of L’Atelier de Laurie and Wella Color Ambassador, has been a professional stylist and colorist for 33 years, with a specialty in innovative and challenging hair trends. I personally think it looks a bit scary to see someone without eyebrows. What do you think?

Bobbi Brown releases teen beauty book, site and a new palette

Whether posting pictures on Facebook, prepping for the prom or nailing the first job interview, never has it been harder for teens to embrace their beauty and stay true to themselves. Renowned makeup artist Bobbi Brown is helping young women become their most amazing selves with her fresh, new beauty bible Beauty Rules (Chronicle Books, September 2010). In Beauty Rules, Bobbi builds beauty from the inside out with tips on everything from exercise and eating right to the importance of being a great friend. And, of course, there’s plenty about getting great makeup. Plus, Hilary Duff wrote the book’s foreword.

In celebration of her new book, Bobbi designed a pretty palette of wearable eye, lip and cheek colors and launched a new site, www.BeautyRules.com. The sites features behind the scenes photos and video footage, before and after images, and a quiz that allows users to create their own set of beauty rules, while accurately match themselves to one of the girls in the book. Plus, a great mother-daughter makeover sweeps.

Save or Splurge? Advice from Prof Makeup Artist, Jessica Lauren

What better a way to jump into the fall season than with a fresh new look? From drugstores to department stores, the beauty industry is flooded with products claiming to be the greatest, leaving consumers wondering which items are worth indulging in. Below, professional makeup artist, Jessica Lauren shares her product recommendations and explains which items give consumers the most bang for their buck.

Splurge: Dior 5 Couleur Eye Shadow

Using the right combination of the five colors, this shadow is ideal for any occasion: casual or formal, any time of the day. “The colors that come in the palate are rich and go on smooth, making it easy to create gorgeous eyes,” she says. Jessica recommends using a combination of the lighter tones with a hint of a darker shade to create a natural daytime look. She suggests accentuating the eyes for the evening by using darker shades to thicken the crease. “Although some eye shadows from drugstores can be bought for under $10, this investment is well worth it,” promises Jessica. Currently available at Bloomingdales for $58

Save: Cover Girl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner

When it comes to eyeliner, consumers seek brands that provide easy application and long term staying power to last throughout the day, informs Jessica. “Unlike other high-end cosmetics, there is not too much of a difference between expensive eyeliners and more affordable ones. I find Cover Girl’s Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner to be one of my favorites as it stays in place all day and has a smudger on the opposite end of the point to create a great smokey look,” she says. Currently available at Walgreens $4.99

Splurge: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eye Shadows

Sheer eye shadows, like this one, are a makeup bag-must-have! Their gentle radiance brightens the eyes but can also be used as an illuminator on the cheek bones to add pizzazz to any look. “Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Wash shadows are ageless and compliment every woman’s look,” says Jessica. Currently available at Nordstrom for $20

Save: Maybelline Falsies Volume Mascara

“My clients always ask for full lashes,” says Jessica. Rather than splurge for the expensive brands, she recommends usingMaybelline Falsie Volume Mascara which is designed to give lashes fullness while fanning them out. “Even better than most brands on the market, this specific mascara also contains fiber enriched formulas to give the lashes extra length as if false lashes were applied,” she says. Currently Available at Walgreens $7.99

Splurge: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer

Unlike other tinted moisturizers, this product helps to control oil breakthrough while hydrating the skin where needed. “Its lightweight texture makes the skin appear super smooth and gives the skin a very natural look,” says Jessica. The product is safe for sensitive skin types and contains SPF 20 to keep the skin protected all year. Currently available at Saks Fifth Avenue for $42

Save: Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil

“Filling in eyebrows leaves a more finished look and enhances the eyes,” says Jessica. When it comes to finding the perfect brow pencil, there’s no need to look any further than your local drugstore. Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil blends easily and has a convenient comb attachment for grooming. “Its waterproof formula allows for a long lasting finish that won’t need to be reapplied throughout the day,” says Jessica. Currently Available at Walgreens for $6.99

Splurge: Giorgio Armani Face Fabric Radiance

Using a good foundation is crucial, as all women want to be sure it will give them the coverage they need without clogging pores. “Face Fabric Radiance is a great cream to powder foundation with light reflecting properties that leave the skin sheer with a gorgeous glow,” says Jessica. She continues, “it doesn’t feel too heavy on the skin and offers a natural, matte look with causing dryness.” Currently Available at Nordstrom for $48

Good Housekeeping Reveals Anti-Aging Products Scientifically Proven to Work

With thousands of products available today claiming to erase years from your face and make you look younger, consumers are confused by, and mistrustful of, these anti-aging promises. That’s why Good Housekeeping is announcing its First Annual Anti-Aging Awards, the first – and largest – scientific study that compares products making anti-aging claims in a dozen categories. Good Housekeeping is one of the most respected and trusted brands in the country – and the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, the magazine’s state-of-the-art product testing laboratory, is one of the reasons why. The anti-aging products scientifically proven to work are revealed in the October issue.

NO MORE NEEDLES: GOOD HOUSEKEEPING’S 18-MONTH STUDY REVEALS BEST ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS BACKED BY IN-DEPTH SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Magazine’s First Anti-Aging Awards Find Many Winners Under $25

NEW YORK, NY (September 7, 2010) – Thousands of anti-aging products crowd drugstore shelves and department store counters, but do any of them really erase fine lines and wrinkles, or give women the more youthful appearance they are searching for? To help readers find out, Good Housekeeping performed the first – and largest – scientific study comparing products making anti-aging claims in a dozen categories. The magazine’s First Annual Anti-Aging Awards are revealed in the October issue, on sale September 14.

The scientists at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute evaluated 90 products in 12 categories, conducting 3,000 lab tests and 5,600 before and after photos on 820 volunteers, ages 35 and older, over the course of 18 months. The 14 winning treatments and 12 honorable mentions received the highest rankings in lab and consumer tests and will offer readers guidance to make the smartest investments in products that actually work.

“Anti-aging claims are everywhere, and it’s frustrating to buy a product – often an expensive one – and find that it doesn’t perform,” says Rosemary Ellis, editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping. “We weren’t sure if anything we tested would really work—but some did, and the best performers weren’t always the most expensive ones.” Ellis points out, “In the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, we have the in-house ability to evaluate products based on science and experimentation. So we can make recommendations our readers can really trust.”
