InStyle: How to create a Boho side braid.

The side-braid—as seen here on Zoe Saldana and Blake Lively—is one of the easiest hairstyle trends to ever hit the red carpet. But in spite of its simplicity (who doesn’t know how to braid?), we still get countless questions about how to get it right. That is, not too loose, skinny, or schoolgirl-ish. Click through our gallery to master the boho side-braid, once and for all.

The Basic Tips
• Start with dry hair that is completely knot-free.
• Create a deep side part with your fingers—not a comb. This is important to facilitate a more undone look and help you stay away from anything too severe.
• Pull all of your hair over one shoulder and braid to the side. If you can create a French braid, like Rachel McAdams, do! If not, no worries. A simple plait still works.
• Fasten with a clear elastic, and leave out wispy pieces to frame the face.

My braids fall out during the day.
Solution: Fact: Braids last longer in dirty hair. The natural oils give twists something to adhere to. If your hair gets too greasy, douse your roots with dry shampoo like Dove’s (available in March, $4; drugstores) and you’ll be good to go.

Today’s polish: ‘Stratford’ by Nails Inc

Today’s polish is a bit different for me! It’s a “Mirror Metallic” polish by Nails Inc, called “Stratford”. I really like it! It’s hard to tell in this picture, but it actually changes colors when you move it. Looks almost mauve sometimes. Love it!!

Makeup Artist Daniel Martin gave actress Gretchen Mol a new romantic look for the Season 3 Premiere of her show, Boardwalk Empire. Daniel wanted to keep her makeup subtle and classic focusing on the lips. Combined with her upswept hair, Gretchen’s final look was a “modern Downton Abbey lady.”

Bic secrets to getting a close shave:

Shave at night – Shaving removes dead skin cells and the superficial layer of skin. While this process is healthy, it reduces your skin’s defenses for a couple hours. Shaving at night gives your skin time to recover its strength and suppleness to resist irritation the next day.
Shave clean skin – To help prevent infection and bumps, make sure your skin is perfectly clean before you shave. Apply hot water beforehand or shave after showering. Warm humidity increases skin elasticity and softens your hair, making it easier to shave.
Apply shaving cream or gel – Use shaving cream or gel with Aloe Vera when shaving — it’s gentler on your skin than regular soap and can help lift hair. Lather the cream or gel, then leave it on for two minutes prior to shaving. Once your hair is softened, the razor will glide more easily over skin.
Use a sharp blade – Change your blades regularly, especially if you have sensitive skin. On sensitive areas like your bikini line and underarms, shaving with a dull blade can result in red spots.
