Adult acne is a growing concern that affects all ages and ethnicities. In the US, it is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting more than 40 million people. On social media, it is the #1 referenced skin-related concern worldwide.1
Acne is an occurrence of inflamed or infected sebaceous glands in the skin that can range from smaller, more localized areas, commonly referred to as breakouts, pimples, spots or zits. Acne can also be a more severe skin issue that spreads over larger areas of the skin. No matter the age, acne can have a true emotional impact on those who experience it, affecting their quality of life, careers and relationships.
With this concern in mind, Kiehl’s Since 1851 chemists proudly introduce Dermatologist SolutionsTM Breakout Control Targeted Acne Spot Treatment, a fast-acting, gentle formula clinically demonstrated to reduce the appearance of breakouts and blemishes in as little as 24 hours, and Dermatologist SolutionsTM Breakout Control Acne Treatment Facial Lotion, a complementary facial lotion that helps reduce the appearance of acne.
More common among women, studies show that adult acne concerns increased by 61% for women in their 30s and 60% for women in their 40s between 2005 and 2013.2 While 80% of adult acne is persistent from teenage years,3 20% of adult acne is late-onset and appears after age 25.4 Regardless of age, acne is caused by 4 common factors:
- Hormonal Influences (or imbalances)
- Blockage of oil or sebum flowing through the skin attributed to genetic factors, changes in the thickness or viscosity of the sebum, scarring from recent breakouts, retained skin cells on the surface of the skin that block pores, improper cleansing and/or occlusive skincare products.
- Bacteria that proliferates within the pocket of entrapped sebum within the pore.
- Inflammation that can come from physical or emotional stress, poor sleep, inhaling/ingesting environmental pollutants/toxins and diet
A key distinction between acne and adult acne is its clinical classification and distribution. Teenagers typically have oilier skin with inflammatory and comedonal (or blocked-pore related) acne that tends to appear in the T-zone. In contrast, adult acne tends to be tied more to inflammation and hormonal dysregulation, which often results in papules, pustules and cysts located along the jaw line and on the cheeks, in what is called the U-zone. Adult acne can also have an increased rate of discoloration, as the process of clearing acne-related blemishes and stains slows down as we age.

Kiehl’s new Breakout Control Acne Treatment is designed to combat adult acne. It contains the maximum amount of sulfur (OTC) to help banish your blemishes in just 24 hours! This lotion does have a bit of texture so I find it easiest to use a night so I am not trying to mess with makeup over it.
I have used this now several times on a few blemishes that popped up. The first sign of acne I applied a bit at night before bed and wow what a difference. The redness is reduced, swelling has diminished and it doesn’t leave my sensitive skin dry or irritated. And on little blemishes they seem to just disappear overnight. I am really impressed with how quick this works, a great product to add to your beauty arsenal.

It leaves my skin feeling clean, clear and hydrated. So glad I have something that works daily to reduce breakouts from working out and seasonal weather changes.
