The Fast Metabolism Diet: Week 1


Week 1 Update:

I am on the last day of my first week and I have to say it has not been easy road. I started my plan last Wednesday, saying good bye to  coffee, sugar, dairy and alcohol for the next 28 days.

Phase 1, as I started to plan I loved that I could have sprouted grain toast, smoothies and lots of fruit it was a yummy phase. But the lack of caffeine and abrupt change in my eating left me pretty exhausted. And even with all the fruit and grains I really missed dairy and healthy fats.

Phase 2, is two days of Protein and Veggies no fats, grains or fruits. If you have a sweet tooth and love carbs like myself this is a very tough two days. Struggling to get over the exhaustion from no caffeine and missing a lot of foods. My picky appetite doesn’t account for many choices on this phase so it was just about surviving. This was definitely the phase I wanted to just quit, at the end of the first day on

Phase 2 my goal became to just survive one week of the diet.

Phase 3, was three days of healthy fats, fruit, grains, protein, and veggies. Toast with almond butter and blueberries? Yes please. Phase 3 is definitely a reward for making it through phase 2 and you can enjoy the fact you get to stay there for three days. This is definitely the easiest phase getting almond butter and avocados… yum I am back to life. With so many options it is fun to cook and I look forward to my meals and snacks.

Overall changes, you  have to drink A LOT of water on this diet half of your body weight in ounces to be exact. There is a definite transition with adding that much water, it brings meaning to the phrase ” I have to pee like  race horse”. So expect a little transition  as your body gets used to more water.

Results: In the first week I have lost 10lbs! Its shocking but makes the dark days of Phase 2 not seem quiet so harsh. And I am feeling better and managing without coffee or diary.  I did make mistakes along the way, in desperation I would take a tiny bite of an English muffin or sneak  a few Cheerios. Making my kids meals was one of the hardest when I was living on chicken and veggies, my kids bowl of cheerios and milk looked good enough to trade my right arm for. When I gave in a tried a bite of dessert or ate a cracker I moved on and didn’t beat myself up but tried to do better. I know I can be an emotional eater and this diet has highlighted when I  would normally have been eating out of exhaustion, stress or a bad day. I am trying to use those points of craving to think do I really want that food and I hungry for it or is it just an emotional feeling I am trying to feed. For now I am enjoying my last day on Phase 3 and interested to see if week 2 will seem a bit easier. Wish me luck!

I will be following The Fast Metabolism Diet for the next 28 days as part of a review with SheSpeaks.  So far I have really enjoyed the book, Hailey takes the time to explain how the foods we do or don’t eat effect our bodies functions and more importantly our metabolism. The 28 days is not a huge chunk of time and I am excited to see how well the program works. Today is my first day on it and so far the food options are great but giving up coffee has been a bear. Hey Lisa,

I have to say so far I think it has. The first week was hard especially kicking my coffee habit but I did lose over 10lbs. I will be charting my progress every week to let you know how it goes. I am hoping it feels easier and I keep losing though I know the first week is usually the most dramatic drop. But so far I would recommend it, all real food no gimmicks just determination.

Phase one is all about fruit. Blueberries are on the list, along with 27 other varieties of fruit!

I cannot seem to start!
It would be a great help if I could SEE precisely what and how much for breakfast , lunch, dinner.

My dtr did lose 16 pounds in 28 days, has kept it off after 8 months.She feels great, looks great and thank G-D is demanding that I do this.

I began the diet again today. I have tried it many times but I didn’t succeed because of my high addiction to tea. This time I am going to dink iced cold water for cold rushes to get past the caffeine headaches. I made it to 21 days last summer and I was very pleased with the results!

I’m on day 3 so far so good this meat and veggie is hard to do because I really don’t have time to cook anything fancy this week. Steak and salad for lunch. I hate chicken breast not sure what I’m having for dinner and I really….really want some tea. Herbal tea taste like hot water. But I’m making it. Can’t wait until Phase 3!

Beverly Seghezzi – See page 24 of the FMD cookbook for amounts. It depends on how much you have to lose:
I would clasify Jerky as Meat. So if you only need to lose 20 pounds or less you would eat 4 oz for all phases, except in Pase 2 you reduce the amount to 2 oz if it’s eaten as a snack.
If you have more than 20 pounds to lose:
6 oz / 3 Oz for Phase 2 smacks

Betty – I’ve read both The Fast Metabolism Diet book and The Burn. In both Haylie talks about Thyroid Disfunction. It sounds like this diet would be helpful for someone with Low Thyroid Function. It’s all just really good “REAL” food. I don’t see how you can go wrong by following this diet plan.

I am on my last day of week 3. I lost 10 pounds the first week and was leterally never hungry. In fact it was difficult to get all the planned food in every day. However the loss slowed down a bit the 2nd week, I even gained a couple pounds back. But the 3rd week was better. I am now down 13 pounds with one week to go. I was hoping to lose 20 pounds in a month. I think I’ll get close to that. Like Erin said in her review, Phase 1 is pretty easy. Phase 2 is the hardest for me, but it’s only 2 days and Phase 3 is wonderful! Unlike Erin, I did not suffer from low energy at any point. 1 or 2 cups of coffee with plenty of flavored sweet cream in the morning was the norm for me. I do miss that. I had a headache for about 3 days that I’m pretty sure came from kicking caffeine. After that I was fine. Herbal tea just isn’t the same but I’m finding it easier to drink now, knowing the health benefits. I noticed a big difference in my mood. Some days I feel downright euphoric! LOL. My stomach loves this way of eating. When I finish this diet I am going to do Haylie Pomroy’s “3 Day I Burn”(for Inflimation) because my ankles have been puffy for as long as I can remember. We can do anything for 3 days, right? Then I’ll do the 28 day diet again because I have a lot more to lose. Eventually I will go back to drinking wine, but more moderately than before and only organic. Maybe I’ll have coffee too, and of course some ice cream now and then. But I will never go back to drinking Diet Sodas and eating foods with preservatives, pesticides, refined sugars and who knows what else. I also plan to try a lot of the suggested Success Boosters. Dry skin brushing and maybe even the Wet Sock treatment and a Mud Bath! :-) This book has changed my life. I want to share it with everyone! Unfortunately, not everyone is ready. I’m hoping that as my progress becomes more noticeable, people will ask and I’ll have an opportunity to share what I’ve learned.
