Anne Hathaway is Allure Magazine’s July cover girl! The ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’ actress shows her famous dimples, and long brown hair for the cover. (Shortly after this shoot, she buzzed her hair off to play Fatine in ‘Les Miserables’.
In the issue, Anne opens up about both roles, and the physical changes she underwent for them. She opened up about what it took for her to wear the Catwoman suit, how she’s dropping weight for ‘Les Miserables’, and how she’s comfortable getting nude on film. Here’s more!
On wearing the Catwoman suit:
Hathaway says that becoming worthy of the Catwoman suit for the upcoming Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, permanently changed her relationship with her body. “It was a psychological terrorist,” she says. “The suit, thoughts of my suit, changing my life so I would fit into that suit…. It dominated my year.” She added, “I didn’t understand how you could be thin and strong. I went into the gym for ten months and didn’t come out.”
On being told to undergo plastic surgery:
Despite her obvious star potential early on, Hathaway was constantly subjected to suggestions for remodeling. “Someone wanted to gift me Lasik surgery,” said the near-sighted actress. And she was told to get Botox at 23. “I was like, ‘Can we maybe discuss heavy creams first?’” Not to say that she’s adamantly opposed to any kind of intervention. “But I reserve the right to figure that out until after I’ve pushed out a bunch of babies.”
On getting nude on film:
It was clear early on that Hathaway was both fearless and sophisticated in knowing what she could pull off and what she couldn’t. Nudity? Fine. Even today, as an A-list actress, she’s surprisingly unbothered by it. “I’m as vain as the next girl,” she says, “but I think it’s my job to show people as they live, and nudity is part of life.”
On turning down the lead in ‘Knocked Up’:
At the same time, she’s passed on roles with scenes she just couldn’t wrap her mind around. Example: Hathaway turned down the role Katherine Heigl took in Knocked Up because of an explicit birth scene. “My issue with it was that having not experienced motherhood myself, I didn’t know how I was gonna feel on the other side about giving birth. And by the way,” she adds, laughing, “I could pop a kid out and think, Oh, well, I really should have done that movie.”
On her fiance, Adam Shulman, and having children:
Hathaway is engaged to her boyfriend of three years, Adam Shulman, an actor turned jewelry designer. While family is very much on her mind as her next step, she isn’t sure how many children she’ll have. “But I’ll start with one healthy one,” she says.
On her vegan diet:
She is hoping, too, that she will be able to maintain her vegan regimen. She describes the diet changes as a “transformation.” Not that she doesn’t have her moments: “I mean, cheese is amazing,” she says. “[But] once you’re over the cheese hump, there’s really nothing left.”
On Anne’s friend Kate Lee doing her makeup during the shoot:
When she arrived on the set, Hathaway and her close friend, makeup artist Kate Lee, shown here, jumped up and down and screamed when they saw each other. For the cover shot, Lee created eyes that were “more Liz Taylor than Sophia Loren.” First, she drew a thin black line from the outer edge of the lashes inward. “It’s not your stereotypical ’50s swoop,” Lee said. She swept medium brown powder under Hathaway’s cheekbones and blended a creamy nude luminizer on top. As a final step, Lee used a liner in the same shade as Hathaway’s lips to enhance their shape.
On styling Anne’s hair for the shoot:
Hairstylist Serge Normant (shown below) wanted to give Hathaway a “polished bedroom texture” for the cover. After spritzing on volumizing spray, he blow-dried her hair with a medium-size boar-bristle brush. He blasted a little dry shampoo on the roots to pump them up and smoothed dry oil on the ends for shine.
